Well, here I am dipping my toe into something new, exciting and very very unknown.

Those greatest journeys start with just a few tiny steps, putting one foot in front of the other, one breath at a time, trying not to put it off until another day, but sometimes it feels quite overwhelming to even do some things that really could just possibly be good.

It is not that I’m not a fairly ordinarily brave person – I have children that I let cross the road without handcuffing to my wrist, I have travelled alone and done exciting crazy things along the way, I am even self employed in these economic times – but starting to write something of myself and where I would like to go on this journey feels somewhat daunting.

So here I am trying to work out how to make a difference to my world, to this world of ours, to see the beauty, slow down, take some time and live consciously before within a whizz & a blink, it is gone.Image

This seems to be a period of hibernation as we settle into a life with snow at the moment.

This is all pretty helpful to the general air of creativity at home – in spite of the shenanigans of three young children!

Cushions have been covered ( after a long period of nakedness!), pyjama trousers have been sewn, cookies baked & eaten, bread made, shelves put up, knitting unravelled ( For probably the 12th time!) … do you think the snow could last for a few more weeks & maybe then I’ll catch up with myself…

Please sign up, sign up … people are signing up by email : handmadeexchange@btinternet.com or by leaving a comment on the blog.

Happy Hibernation

Valuable Gifts

Well I’ve been sitting here, nearly half way through the socks I started knitting longer ago than I should admit…

and I’ve been thinking about VALUE.

A really tricky thing with an exchange, possibly particularly a handmade exchange is how to achieve an equal exchange.

A monetary value doesn’t quite fit, neither necessarily does a time spent value.

My suggestion is that the gift should be the equivalent to a gift you would give a very special, or best friend, possibly a close sibling.

A gift that has been made with care, love & attention to detail.

A gift you would love to receive yourself.

The Deal is ..

Okay, here is the nitty gritty about the exchange –

1. Register your intention to take part by placing a comment OR by sending an email to handmadeexchange@btinternet.com

Please state whether or not you are willing to ship your gift overseas by airmail, or whether you would rather stay within your own country.

Registration will close at midnight GMT on 31st January

2. You will receive details of your exchange partner on or before 14th February 2010.

3. Please introduce yourself to your partner by 28th February 2010 so everybody knows contact is established.

If you cannot make contact please let us know asap so we can sort the situation out & if necessary give you a new partner.

If there is anyone who would happily be partnered twice just in case there is an emergency situation, please let us know.

4. Get to know each other, chat & mingle, make friends & start thinking about what you could make that your partner might REALLY love!

5. Please keep in touch.

Life can sometimes get too much for everybody & if you realise, however late in the day that you cannot continue with the exchange, let us know as soon as possible so that alternative arrangements can be made .

6. Get Making

7. Posting date : Saturday 24th April or for those nearby

Wednesday 28th April come & exchange in person at Main’s Restaurant – more details later

Just to fill you in

Handmade Exchange is being hosted by Nancy Main & Jason Vincent.

We live in a small village called Yoxford in Suffolk, England where we have a restaurant called Main’s.

A restaurant which not only has yummy food, but also has Pottery classes, Stitch & Sip nights and a general feeling of craftiness with local artists on the walls & crayons on the tables!

We are both pretty into making things – a lot of food obviously, but also we knit, sew, pot, make things from wood, draw, paint – we will try our hands at just about anything.

The Handmade Exchange is a project we are very excited about ( & hope you are too).

Further information about how to sign up will be posted tomorrow.

Meanwhile enjoy the snow, sunshine or rain wherever you are. xx
